How can HR make a genuine commercial impact?

We would all agree that HR leaders and teams, to be truly effective, need to have a strong commercial role within organisations. It’s not good enough anymore to be ‘just’ an HR technical expert, welfare provider or custodian of policies.
Yet we can all think of cases where HR just hasn’t been able to rise to the challenge; maybe because it doesn’t really understand the business or, perhaps, HR professionals themselves don’t have the right capabilities – or maybe there are other reasons.
The London HR Connection is delighted to welcome one of the UK’s most respected senior HR professionals to discuss this topic with us on 22nd May.
Harvey Francis is the Executive VP of HR & Communications at Skanska, the fifth largest construction company in the world, and will share with London HR Connection members and guests just how he has tackled the issue of increasing the commercial impact of HR teams.
Harvey will draw upon Skanska’s wide experience across a range of contexts and different sectors and look at two key issues: How HR can influence the business in ways which go beyond the stereotypical boundaries of the HR function and help shape and support the commercial strategy and how HR can reshape itself in terms of roles, people, processes and systems to become a valued contributor to the commercial agenda.
Harvey Francis is a board member of Skanska UK and a member of the executive management team with functional leadership responsibility for HR and communications across 5500 employees. He is also Chair of the Skanska pension trustee board and a member of Skanska’s ethics committee.
Skanska has been a winner of Construction News’ Employer of the Year Award and Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award, finalist for the HR Magazine HR Team of the Year and HR Director of the Year and highly commended for HR Team of the Year at the CIPD Awards.
Harvey spent the early part of his career in retail management before moving into HR, working for House of Fraser, Virgin Group, BT and Pfizer before joining Skanska in 2007. Listed on HR Magazine’s ‘Most Influential’ for the construction sector in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, Harvey has driven significant change including the development of organisational culture and structure, and the introduction of a people strategy to guide the organisation through recession and return to growth, which includes robust talent management. His specialties include business transformation, organisation development and culture change, people strategy, HR transformation, and talent management.
